The Ugandan Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Eng. Hilary Onek Obaloker, has threatened to have underperforming Non-Governmental Organizations operating in Lamwo district de-registered.

Onek who doubles as the Palabek County Member of Parliament said that some NGO’s in the district which have been registered to support Refugees and the host communities are just “briefcase” NGOs.
Lamwo district in the Northern Region of Uganda is home to over 50,000 South Sudanese refugees who have settled in Palabek settlement camp since its establishment in 2016 when civil war broke out in the neighbouring country.

Onek who was on Wednesday speaking at the district Women’s day celebration at Dicwinyu Primary School in Palabek Town council was responding to concerns by James Okumu Bediju, the Lamwo Chief Administrative Officer that there is lack of proper coordination between the Lamwo district Local government and development partners operating in Lamwo district.

Lamwo district, hosting more than 75,000, South Sudanese refugees in the three settlements of Palabek- Kal, Palabek- Ogiri, and Palabek- Gem has 69 registered Development Partners, according to the Chief Administrative Officer, but the minister said they are all upto nothing and some of them shall be deregistered.
