The Uganda Peoples Congress insists that Jimmy Akena is still the party president until the time when the party will hold its next delegates conference in 2025.

In 2015,the UPC party held a delegates conference in which Jimmy Akena, son of the late President Apollo Milton Obote was elected president of the party.
However, Akena’s election left some party members disgruntled, and a UPC member Joseph Othieno claimed that Akena imposed himself on the seat, against the then party president Dr. John Olara Otunu.

He added that, Akena has been illegally occupyng the office of the party president all these years.
Party members the late Joseph Bossa, Isha Otoo Amiza, and Professor Edward Kakonge applied for a Judicial review in the high court, saying Akena’s election was illegal.
Three judges, Irene Mulyagonja, Christopher Madrama and Elizabeth Musoke, ruled in favour of Professor Kakonge and others.
However, the UPC Party’s Secretary General Fred Ebil says Akena was re-elected in 2020 and that a Court Judgement against his election has been overtaken by events.

Even after the ruling, Joseph Kyaze and Advocate appealed to the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the court of appeal judgement against Akena, but Ebil said the party did not instruct Kyaze to represent Akena in the Supreme Court.
This follows a Supreme Court ruling on Friday last week which annulled the election of Jimmy Akena saying he has been illegally occupying the position of UPC party President since 2015.
