The recent attacks in the contested Apaa Township, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and severe injuries to 11 others, have once again brought attention to the ongoing conflict in the area.

The incident happened between Thursday and Saturday, where the assailants, who remain unidentified, carried out the attacks using machetes, bows, and arrows in separate raids in the parishes of Oyanga, Luru, and Acholi Ber.
The victims of the attacks include individuals from central Uganda as well as local farmers of Madi origin.
Efforts to transport the bodies of the deceased have been hindered by the prevailing insecurity in the area.
Additionally, hundreds of makeshift structures and grass-thatched huts have been destroyed in the attacks.
The deployment of the army in the affected areas and ongoing investigations aim to address the insecurity and apprehend the perpetrators behind the crimes. However, the attacks have caused panic among the community members, leading many to flee their homes for safety.

The conflicts over the Apaa land, which have persisted since 2012, have proven to be challenging to resolve. Despite efforts by government, political, religious, and traditional leaders, the tension between the communities of Acholi and the Madi remains unresolved.
The commissioning of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Apaa land conflicts in August this year was seen as a last resort to address the ongoing disputes. However, the Commission is yet to commence its work.
It is imperative that a peaceful resolution to the land conflicts in Apaa is reached to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the safety of the residents in the area. The government and relevant stakeholders must work together to find a lasting solution to the longstanding disputes.
