The state-of-the-art 20,000-seat Akii Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to be completed within 20 months and will feature a main stadium, training facilities, an indoor stadium, a swimming pool, outdoor courts, parking, and other essential infrastructure. This project is a testament to the Ugandan government’s commitment to supporting the sports sector, and the community’s generosity in donating 18.455 acres of land for the stadium’s construction.

The stadium is named after John Akii-Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist. Born on December 3, 1949, Akii-Bua was a renowned hurdler who won the 400-meter hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics, setting a world record of 47.82 seconds. He is considered one of Uganda’s greatest athletes and a pioneer in the country’s sports history.

The completion of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium will not only honor the legacy of this sports legend but also provide a world-class facility for hosting international events and promoting sports development in Uganda. With this project, Uganda is poised to become a hub for sports excellence in the region.
