Ugandan Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya has passed away at the age of 37.
The opposition MP, who represented the National Unity Platform (NUP), died on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala.
Ssegirinya had been in poor health since his release from prison in February 2023, where he was detained for several months on allegations of murder and terrorism. He had been receiving treatment at Aga Khan Hospital before returning to Uganda.

Known for his activism and candid nature, Ssegirinya was a vocal advocate for human rights and social justice. He was affectionately referred to as “Mr. Update” due to his strong social media presence, which helped him connect with many Ugandans who admired his dedication to serving the underprivileged.

Ssegirinya’s political career was marked by his outspoken criticism of government policies and his advocacy for accountability and justice. However, he faced numerous challenges, including arrests and allegations of involvement in rebel activities, which were widely dismissed as politically motivated.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, described Ssegirinya’s passing as “a dark morning” and praised his dedication to the struggle for freedom and justice. Ssegirinya’s legacy will be remembered for his courage, compassion, and relentless pursuit of justice.

Health Challenges
Ssegirinyas health significantly deteriorated following his release.
He sought treatment in the Netherlands for injuries allegedly sustained during his incarceration.
Despite his health struggles, Ssegirinya remained committed to public service, announcing in August 2024 his intention to contest again in the 2026 parliamentary elections.

Advocacy
Ssegirinyas death has left a void in Ugandas political landscape.
Known for his humility, compassion, and relentless pursuit of justice, he leaves behind a legacy of courage and service.
Ssegirinya is survived by his family and his legacy as a champion for the voiceless.
