Kitgum District is gearing up for the 48th St. Janani Luwum’s Day celebrations, scheduled to take place on February 16, 2025.
However, the preparations are being overshadowed by a cholera outbreak in the locality.
The Local Organizing Committee is seeking 98 million shillings in funding to ensure the event’s success.
Kitgum District LCV Chairperson, Christopher Obol Arwai, has urged residents to remain vigilant following the report of a cholera case in the district.

The outbreak poses a significant risk, especially with the upcoming celebrations, which are expected to attract large crowds.
St. Janani Luwum’s Day is an annual event commemorating the life and legacy of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a prominent Ugandan religious leader who was martyred in 1977.

The celebrations typically involve pilgrimages, prayers, and other activities.
The cholera outbreak in Kitgum District has raised concerns about the potential spread of the disease during the St. Janani Luwum’s Day celebrations.
Cholera is a highly infectious disease that can spread quickly in crowded areas, making public gatherings like the upcoming celebrations a high-risk environment.

To minimize the risk of cholera transmission during the celebrations, authorities and organizers must ensure that proper hygiene and sanitation measures are in place.
This includes providing access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and promoting handwashing practices.
