Lira, May 6, 2025 – A somber requiem mass is currently underway at Lira Diocese Cathedral to honor the life and legacy of Colonel (Rtd) Tonny Otoa, a revered retired army officer remembered for his patriotism, discipline, and unwavering service to Uganda and the Lango community.

The body of Col. Otoa was earlier transported from his family home in Boke to the cathedral, accompanied by a convoy of mourners, prayers, and hymns.

The mass, presided over by Rev. Fr. Stephen Odwongo, Curate of Lira Cathederal Parish, Lira Catholic Diocese, has drawn a diverse congregation, including family members, friends, clergy, and dignitaries such as former Lands Minister Daniel Omara Atubo and Speaker LCI Willy Omodo Omodo.

The solemn ceremony reflects the deep respect and admiration for Col. Otoa’s contributions to his nation and community.

A Life of Service and Faith

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Odwongo described Col. Otoa as a pillar of faith, peace, and unity, highlighting his exemplary military service and dedication to upholding cultural values within the Lango community. “Colonel Otoa’s commitment to his faith, his people, and his country was unwavering,” Fr. Odwongo said. “His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”

The selected scripture readings echoed themes of comfort, hope, and eternal rest:

• First Reading: Lamentations 3:19-27, reflecting on perseverance through suffering.
• Second Reading: Romans 8:31b-35, 37-39, emphasizing God’s inseparable love.
• Gospel: John 11:17-27, proclaiming Jesus as the resurrection and the life.

Fr. Odwongo urged the congregation to remain steadfast in their faith, reminding them of the inevitability of death and the importance of spiritual preparedness. “Everyone is eligible for death, but it is vital to die in the Lord,” he said. “No matter the hardships, never abandon God.” His message resonated as a call to emulate Col. Otoa’s life of faith, hope, and trust in God.
