Buikwe, Uganda – A catastrophic accident involving a YY Coaches bus occurred Monday along the Njeru–Katosi Road in Makindu Trading Centre, Najja Sub-county, Buikwe District, resulting in numerous fatalities and few survivors.
The bus, traveling to Soroti City, overturned and caught fire, trapping passengers inside.
Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, confirmed the incident to reporters, stating that the bus overturned while attempting to avoid a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi), which led to the vehicle catching fire.
Preliminary estimates from The Northern Press reporter suggest only three to six passengers survived, though official figures are yet to be confirmed by the Uganda Police.

Butoto noted that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause, with initial findings pointing to the driver’s maneuver to avoid the boda-boda.
The police are also examining potential factors such as road conditions or mechanical issues. The Northern Press reported that emergency services responded, but the fire’s intensity left little chance for many passengers.
This tragedy adds to YY Coaches’ troubling safety record. A May 2023 accident along Tirinyi Road claimed three lives, raising concerns about the company’s operations. Social media reactions express grief and frustration, with users urging loved ones to confirm their safety and calling for stricter transport regulations.
The Uganda Police are expected to release an official statement soon, as the community mourns and demands accountability.
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures in Uganda’s public transportation sector.
