Local leaders in Abok Sub-county, Oyam District, have sounded the alarm, urging residents living near wetlands to relocate immediately due to ongoing heavy rainfall. The warning comes as the region braces for potential flooding, with memories of last year’s devastating deluge still fresh in the minds of communities.
Last year, villages such as Anyom C, Anyom A, and Orupu bore the brunt of severe flooding that swept through the sub-county. Homes were destroyed, farmlands were submerged, and livelihoods were upended as floodwaters left a trail of destruction. Determined to prevent a repeat of such losses, authorities are taking proactive measures this time around.
“We cannot wait for disaster to strike again,” said a local leader in Abok Sub-county, addressing residents during a community meeting. “The rains are heavy, and the wetlands are already swelling. We urge everyone in low-lying areas to move to safer grounds now to protect their lives and property.”
The call to action follows weeks of relentless rainfall across Oyam District, which has raised water levels in wetlands and rivers, heightening the risk of flooding. Local officials are working to identify safe relocation sites and are coordinating with humanitarian organizations to provide support for affected families.
Residents have been advised to stay vigilant, secure their belongings, and cooperate with local authorities to ensure a smooth evacuation process. Community leaders are also appealing for government and NGO assistance to bolster preparedness efforts, including the provision of food, shelter, and medical supplies for those who may be displaced.
The proactive stance by Oyam’s leaders underscores the growing need for climate resilience in vulnerable regions like Abok Sub-county, where extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. For now, the focus remains on protecting lives and minimizing damage as the rains continue to pour.
