Lira, Gulu, and West Nile, May 20, 2025 — More than 1,500 pilgrims from Northern Uganda have embarked on a spiritual journey to Namugongo for the annual Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, set to take place on June 3, 2025. This significant event, which honors the martyrdom of 45 Christian converts executed in the late 19th century, draws thousands of devotees from across Uganda and beyond to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine each year.
According to recent reports from dioceses in Northern Uganda, the pilgrimage includes 986 faithful from the Lango region, specifically Lira City, 200 from the Gulu Diocese, and over 300 from the West Nile region, with 50 hailing from Madi West Nile. These pilgrims, driven by faith and devotion, are trekking long distances, often on foot, to pay homage to the Uganda Martyrs, whose sacrifice remains a cornerstone of the country’s Christian heritage.
The journey from Northern Uganda to Namugongo, located near Kampala, is no small feat. Pilgrims endure days of walking, braving unpredictable weather and challenging terrains, as a testament to their spiritual commitment. Many carry crosses, sing hymns, and pray along the way, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.
“This pilgrimage is a profound expression of faith,” said a spokesperson from the Lira Diocese. “For many, it’s not just about reaching Namugongo but about the spiritual transformation that comes with the journey.”

The Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations commemorate the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs who were executed between 1885 and 1887 under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, then king of Buganda. Their unwavering faith in the face of persecution has made Namugongo a significant pilgrimage site, attracting both local and international devotees.
As the pilgrims from Northern Uganda join thousands of others converging on Namugongo, preparations are underway to ensure a safe and meaningful celebration. Local authorities and church leaders are coordinating to provide security, medical services, and accommodations for the influx of visitors.
The 2025 Uganda Martyrs Day promises to be a vibrant and solemn occasion, uniting people from diverse backgrounds in a shared tribute to faith, sacrifice, and resilience.
