Kampala, Uganda – May 26, 2025
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced its intention to appeal a recent court ruling that nullified the election of one of its members, Nalukoola, as reported in posts on X. The decision, which has sparked significant discussion among party supporters, has been met with criticism and a call to action from NUP leaders, who view the ruling as a setback to their political efforts.
The court’s decision to invalidate Nalukoola’s election has raised concerns among NUP supporters, with some alleging that the ruling is part of a broader strategy to undermine the party’s influence. In a statement shared on X, NUP leaders expressed their determination to challenge the ruling in the Court of Appeal, emphasizing their commitment to defending their electoral victories. “We will not sit back while our wins are overturned. We’re heading to the Court of Appeal to seek justice,” a post from @nilepostnews stated, reflecting the party’s resolve.
The announcement follows a pattern of legal challenges for NUP, as the party has previously contested court decisions affecting its members. For instance, in October 2024, NUP leaders, including Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya and lawyer George Musisi, declared their intent to appeal a court’s dismissal of an application related to 18 missing NUP supporters, highlighting the party’s ongoing struggles with the judicial system.

Supporters on X have voiced mixed sentiments about the appeal. One user, @MDeodonio, suggested that if the Court of Appeal upholds the ruling, NUP should reconsider participating in future elections, citing fears of targeted abductions and imprisonment of party supporters. “Let’s go to the Court of Appeal, but if they maintain the ruling, no going into another election. They are planning to abduct, torture, and imprison many NUP supporters,” the post read. These concerns reflect the charged atmosphere surrounding the case and the broader political climate in Uganda.
NUP’s decision to appeal underscores the party’s commitment to protecting its political gains amid ongoing tensions. As the legal battle moves to the Court of Appeal, all eyes will be on the judiciary to see how this case unfolds and what it means for NUP’s future in Ugandan politics. The party has not yet announced a specific timeline for the appeal, but supporters are rallying behind the cause, as evidenced by posts like that of @wamala_kam17559, which declared, “NUP TO APPEAL THE RULING IN NAMBI VS NALUKOOLA JUDGEMENT.”
