Lira City, Uganda – On Sunday, June 1, 2025, the sanctuary of Faith Mission of Uganda Church in Lira City West Division buzzed with spiritual fervor as Rev. Francis Munu delivered a compelling sermon on the Great Commission, Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples as recorded in Matthew 28:18-20. Under the theme “The Last Instruction Jesus Gave to His Disciples,” Rev. Munu called on believers to embrace their divine authority, spread the gospel, and live as mature ambassadors of Christ.
Authority to Act: The Great Commission
Quoting Matthew 28:18-20, Rev. Munu emphasized the authority bestowed upon Christians: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” He passionately urged the congregation to see themselves as active participants in God’s mission. “We are not just churchgoers,” he declared. “We are called to preach the gospel, win souls for Christ, and baptize new believers, empowered by the authority of Jesus Himself.”
Overcoming Fear with God’s Power
Referencing 2 Timothy 1:7, Rev. Munu reminded the congregation that God has equipped believers with a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind, not fear. He encouraged the church to overcome timidity and boldly share the gospel. “God’s love is our foundation,” he said. “Because He first loved us, we must love others and share the good news without hesitation.” This message struck a chord with many attendees, who nodded in agreement as they reflected on their personal call to evangelism.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit
Rev. Munu also drew from Acts 1:1-4, where Jesus instructed His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit before beginning their mission. He explained that the Holy Spirit provides the strength and wisdom needed to fulfill the Great Commission. “Just as the disciples waited in Jerusalem for the Spirit’s power, we too must seek God’s guidance and empowerment to carry out His work effectively,” he noted. This call to reliance on the Spirit resonated deeply, reminding the congregation of their dependence on divine strength.
A Call to Spiritual Maturity
A key focus of the sermon was the need for spiritual maturity within the Church. Citing Ephesians 1:17, Rev. Munu prayed for the congregation to receive “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.” He challenged believers to grow in their faith, emphasizing that God is seeking mature Christians who reflect Christ’s character. “Maturity means making peace with others, forgiving, and living in unity,” he said. “A mature church is one that pursues the Great Commission with boldness and love.”
A Challenge to the Church
In his closing remarks, Rev. Munu issued a heartfelt challenge to the congregation: “God has given us the authority, the power, and the love to fulfill His mission. Let us go out, preach the gospel, win souls, and make disciples, trusting that Jesus is with us always.” The sanctuary erupted in applause as attendees reflected on their role in advancing God’s kingdom. Many left the service inspired to take practical steps in sharing their faith and fostering peace in their communities.
A Lasting Impact
Rev. Francis Munu’s sermon was a timely and powerful reminder for the members of Faith Mission of Uganda Church to embrace their calling as Christ’s disciples. His message underscored the importance of spiritual maturity, reliance on the Holy Spirit, and fearless obedience to the Great Commission. As the church in Lira City continues to grow, this sermon will undoubtedly inspire its members to live purposefully for Christ and make a lasting impact in their community.
