Kole District, Uganda – Aculbanya Secondary School, a cornerstone of education in Kole District since 1982, is grappling with a severe water crisis that endangers the academic performance of its 1,367 students.

With only one borehole to serve the entire student population, the school is struggling to provide clean water, forcing an inadequate arrangement with nearby Aculbanya Primary School to share their borehole.

Deputy Headteacher George Odongo raised the alarm during a recent career guidance and counseling session hosted by the Aculbanya Secondary School Old Students Association (AOSA). “The water shortage is a critical challenge that requires an immediate solution,” Odongo stated, appealing to the government, NGOs, and well-wishers to help fund an additional water source. “Without urgent intervention, our students’ academic performance and well-being are at risk.”

The water crisis is not the school’s only hurdle. Last year, Headteacher Chagan Dick highlighted the lack of adequate transportation, noting the loss of the school’s Tata Lorry to government soldiers years ago. Kole Woman MP Judith Alyek promised to secure a new school bus, but this commitment remains unfulfilled, leaving the school’s logistical challenges unresolved.

Despite these setbacks, the Aculbanya Secondary School Old Students Association continues to champion the institution’s legacy. Vice Chairperson Tonny Okello praised the school for facilitating the recent AOSA event, where former students inspired current ones through talks and activities. The association also donated a school signpost and pledged ongoing support to enhance the students’ future.

Aculbanya Secondary School, known for producing professionals across various fields, stands at a critical juncture. The call to action is urgent: stakeholders must rally to provide the resources needed to secure clean water and sustain the school’s mission of shaping bright futures.

How You Can Help: Donations and support for a new borehole can be coordinated through Aculbanya Secondary School or the AOSA. Let’s unite to save this vital institution and ensure its students thrive.
