Otuke, Uganda – August 19, 2025
A devastating incident has shaken the community of Teokango village, Anepkide parish, Olilim Sub-County in Otuke District, where 25-year-old Ongu Calvin is in police custody following allegations of fatally stabbing his 76-year-old grandfather, Ongu John.
The incident occurred on August 18, 2025, at approximately 6:00 PM and was reported to the Olilim Sub-County Police Station the following day by 32-year-old Owume Francis, a resident of the same village.
According to authorities, the altercation arose when Ongu John, who had secured a village loan of UGX 500,000 on August 17, 2025, refused to give his grandson, Ongu Calvin, UGX 10,000 to buy a pair of shoes. The disagreement escalated into a physical scuffle, during which Calvin allegedly stabbed his grandfather. Ongu John was rushed to a nearby clinic but succumbed to his injuries.
Community members swiftly apprehended Calvin and handed him over to the territorial police. A team from Otuke Central Police Station visited the crime scene, thoroughly documenting evidence and recovering a knife believed to be the murder weapon, which has been cataloged as evidence. Witness statements have been recorded, and a postmortem was conducted before the body was released to relatives for burial.
Superintendent of Police PJ Okema, Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region, described the incident as a tragic reflection of a growing sense of entitlement among some youths. “This is a deeply unfortunate event,” Okema stated. “We urge young people to work hard for their needs rather than expecting handouts.” He assured the public that the police are committed to a thorough investigation, with the case file to be submitted to the Resident Chief State Attorney for legal guidance.
The loss of Ongu John has sparked grief and reflection in Otuke, prompting discussions on conflict resolution and the importance of fostering self-reliance among the youth. The investigation continues as the community mourns.
