YUMBE, September 15, 2025 – Police in Yumbe district acted swiftly on September 14, 2025, to rescue a suspected cattle thief from a violent mob in Charanga Village, saving him from severe assault and ensuring his safety.

The suspect, identified as Onzima, a male, was allegedly involved in the theft of four goats purchased through the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, a government initiative aimed at poverty alleviation.

According to a police report (YUMBE CRB: 670/2025), officers received a distress call at approximately 07:30 hours on Sunday, September 14, reporting the incident. A team was promptly dispatched to the scene, where they found the suspect being attacked by an angry mob. During the rescue operation, police recovered two of the stolen goats and ensured the suspect was safely extracted from the situation.

The suspect, who sustained serious injuries from the mob’s assault, was immediately rushed to Yumbe Health Center IV for medical treatment. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident, with further updates to be provided as the case progresses.

SP Asea Collins, the North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, commended the officers for their quick response and urged the community to protect government poverty alleviation projects like the PDM. “We call on the public to report any suspicious activities to the police promptly rather than resorting to mob justice,” SP Collins stated. “This ensures justice is served lawfully and protects the integrity of community development initiatives.”

The incident highlights ongoing challenges with mob justice in the region and underscores the importance of community cooperation with law enforcement to safeguard public resources. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft and the subsequent mob attack.
