Lira, September 23, 2025 – The nomination process for the 2026 presidential election officially commenced today, September 23, 2025, in line with Section 9(1) of the Presidential Election Act, marking the start of a highly anticipated political season in the North Kyoga Region.
The police have assured the public of their readiness to maintain peace and order as campaigns kick off.
Presidential Nominations and Campaign Launch
This morning, the first presidential candidate was successfully nominated, paving the way for the campaign period. According to North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the first nominated candidate, the incumbent President, will launch his campaign in the Lango Sub-Region, specifically in Amolatar District, on October 1, 2025.
Upcoming Parliamentary and Special Interest Group Nominations
The nomination of candidates for parliamentary elections, as outlined in Section 9 of the Parliamentary Election Act Cap 177, is scheduled for October 22 and 23, 2025. Campaigns for these candidates will run from November 10, 2025, to January 12, 2026. Additionally, nominations for representatives of special interest groups to Parliament will also take place on October 22 and 23, with local government campaigns starting on November 10.

Police Commitment to Public Order
SP Okema emphasized the police’s mandate under Article 212 of the Constitution, which includes protecting life and property, preserving law and order, preventing and detecting crime, and cooperating with civilian authorities and other security agencies. “Our key focus is public order management, which involves strategies to maintain peace, safety, and tranquility within the community,” Okema stated.
To ensure smooth electoral processes, the police have developed comprehensive traffic plans, including directing routes and dispersing defiant or unruly crowds. “We want to assure the public of our preparedness in handling these electoral processes in the North Kyoga Region,” Okema added.
The police’s proactive measures aim to foster a peaceful environment as the region prepares for a busy political season.
