In a devastating incident that has left the community of Aliwara Village in Adjumani District reeling, a 47-year-old farmer, Obol Joseph, allegedly beat his wife, Amony Night, to death during a domestic dispute fueled by alcohol.
The suspect remains at large as police intensify their manhunt, while the family and community mourn the loss of the 43-year-old housewife.
The tragic event occurred on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at approximately 4:00 PM in Aliwara Village, Mungula Parish, Itirikwoa Sub-County. According to a police report from the Adjumani Central Police Station (CPS), logged under Vide Apaa Police Post SD Ref 35/07/10/2025, Obol and Amony, who were husband and wife, were intoxicated when an argument escalated into a violent confrontation.
A Fatal Altercation
Preliminary investigations reveal that the dispute turned physical, with Obol assaulting Amony, leaving her unconscious. Instead of seeking help, the suspect fled the scene, leaving his wife in critical condition at their home. Alerted by neighbors, the community acted swiftly, rushing Amony to the Apaa (Laime) Medical and Maternity Home. Tragically, upon arrival at around 4:25 PM, medical staff confirmed she had passed away.
The incident was reported to the Vide Apaa Police Post at 4:25 PM on the same day, prompting immediate action from law enforcement. Police have since secured the scene and are collecting statements from witnesses to piece together the events leading to Amony’s death.
Suspect on the Run
Obol Joseph, a peasant farmer and resident of Aliwara Village, is the prime suspect in this murder case. Described as 47 years old, he has evaded capture since fleeing the homestead. Authorities have issued an urgent appeal to the public for information on his whereabouts, warning that aiding a fugitive could result in legal consequences.
Amony’s grieving family is preparing to transport her body to Gulu Military Hospital for a post-mortem examination to aid the investigation. “We are heartbroken,” said a relative, who requested anonymity. “Amony was a loving mother and wife. We want justice for her, and we hope this tragedy highlights the dangers of unresolved conflicts.”
Superintendent Asea Ccollins, spokesperson for the North West Nile Region Police, addressed the incident in an official statement. “This is a tragic case of domestic violence that has robbed a family of a loved one,” SP Asea said. “We are committed to apprehending the suspect and ensuring a thorough investigation. Our thoughts are with the family and community during this difficult time.”
A Call to Address Domestic Violence
This incident underscores the persistent challenge of domestic violence in rural Uganda, particularly in regions like West Nile, where alcohol abuse and limited access to social services often exacerbate tensions. Community leaders and advocates are calling for urgent action to address these issues.
“Cases like this are a painful reminder of the need for awareness and intervention,” said Sarah Alum, a local gender rights advocate. “We need programs to educate families on conflict resolution and provide support for alcohol-related issues to prevent such tragedies.”
