October 16, 2025 – Arua City, West Nile Region, Uganda
A tragic road accident in Arua City has claimed the life of a motorcycle rider, prompting police to launch a full investigation into the incident.
The collision, which occurred on the morning of October 16, 2025, involved a passenger bus and a motorcycle on the Nebbi-Arua City highway, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
According to a statement from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Josephine Angucia, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the West Nile Region, the accident took place at approximately 7:35 a.m. in Awindiri Cell, Arua City Central Division. The vehicles involved were an Isuzu bus, registration number UBF 182W, painted yellow and green, owned by Nile Star Bus Company and driven by Ochungi Hamidu, and a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFW 068Q, ridden by Alioma Robert. Details of passengers on the bus have not yet been established.
The bus was traveling from Kampala to Arua City when it collided with the oncoming motorcycle, which was heading from Arua City toward Awindiri. Preliminary investigations suggest that the motorcycle rider made a reckless abrupt right turn on the highway, leading to the head-on impact. “As they approached each other from opposite directions, the rider recklessly made an abrupt turn on the right hence colliding with the Bus,” the statement noted, attributing the cause to reckless riding by the motorcyclist.
Arua Central Police Traffic officers responded swiftly to the scene. The vehicles were impounded and parked at Arua Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). Victims were rushed to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, though the motorcycle rider’s injuries proved fatal. A sketch plan of the accident site was drawn, and further inquiries are ongoing to determine additional factors.
In her statement, SSP Angucia urged all road users, particularly motorcycle riders, to exercise caution and remain alert at all times. “We urge motorcycle riders to be careful and alert on the road all the time, and avoid gross mistakes like abrupt turnings on fully used highways to avoid accidents,” she emphasized.
This incident adds to the growing number of road fatalities in Uganda, where reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate enforcement continue to pose significant risks. Authorities are calling for increased awareness and adherence to traffic rules to prevent such tragedies in the future. As investigations proceed, more details may emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash.
