A devastating road crash near Kitaleba Village, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway, has claimed the lives of 63 people and left several others injured as of this morning.
The tragic incident, which occurred at 12:15 am today, involved a head-on collision between two buses and a subsequent chain reaction that saw multiple vehicles overturn.
Eyewitnesses report that the accident began when an Isuzu bus (UBF 614X, Nile Star Coaches), traveling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake a Tata Lorry (UBK 647C). At the same time, another Isuzu bus (UAM 045V, Planet Company), moving in the opposite direction, tried to pass a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07).

The ill-fated overtaking maneuvers led to a catastrophic head-on and side collision, with one driver swerving unsuccessfully to avoid impact. The collision triggered a domino effect, causing the involved vehicles—including the lorry and a Toyota Surf—to lose control and overturn multiple times.
Police arrived swiftly at the scene, rushing the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical facilities. The deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem and identification. Authorities have confirmed that all 63 fatalities were occupants of the involved vehicles.

Investigations are ongoing, with police urging motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly avoiding reckless overtaking—a persistent cause of road accidents in Uganda. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and call for heightened road safety awareness,” said SP Kananura Michael of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.
