Adjumani, Uganda – A 25-year-old peasant farmer was beaten to death by an angry mob in Unna Central Village, Pachara Sub-county, Adjumani District, on Christmas Eve after being accused of stealing two chickens.
According to a police incident report from Adjumani Police Station, the deceased, identified as Itraru Timothy, a Madi tribesman and resident of Unna Central Village, was part of a group of three suspects who allegedly broke into a homestead around 5:00 AM on December 24, 2025, and stole the chickens.
The homestead owner raised an alarm, attracting villagers who pursued and confronted the suspects. In the ensuing chaos, the mob severely assaulted the three men. Police intervened and rescued two of the suspects, who were taken into custody for investigation. However, Itraru Timothy suffered critical injuries and was handed over to his relatives, who rushed him to Adjumani General Hospital.
Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries overnight and was pronounced dead on the morning of December 25, 2025. His father reported the death to authorities later that day.
A postmortem examination was conducted at the hospital, and the body was subsequently released to the family for burial. Police visited the scene, recovering the two dead chickens as exhibits.
The case has been registered as murder by mob action under reference ADJ CRB 749/2025. Investigations are ongoing, with statements recorded and forms submitted for further inquiry.
North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Asea Collins signed the report, emphasizing that more details will emerge as the probe progresses.
Mob justice remains a persistent concern in Uganda, often triggered by suspicions of theft amid frustrations over crime and perceived delays in the formal justice system. Authorities continue to urge communities to hand over suspects to police rather than resorting to vigilante violence.
