Lira University has strongly refuted the alleged industrial action taken by certain staff members at the University Hospital, citing inadequate notice and a lack of adherence to proper procedures.
According to Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng, the Vice Chancellor, the university received a notification of Industrial Action from the National Union of Educational Institutions, Lira University Branch, dated March 1st, 2024, signed by the Chairman and Secretary.
The letter indicated that the Teaching Hospital Staff intended to strike from March 4th, 2024, until their salary demands were met, despite being staff with only Diploma qualifications.
In response, Prof. Ogwal Okeng declared on March 5, 2024, that the Lira University Teaching Hospital remains operational, with services running as usual.
He assured that all doctors, degree nurses, and midwives, along with other willing diploma staff, were present at their posts.
Furthermore, he stated that all staff at the Lira University Teaching Hospital were expected to report for duty, as discussions regarding the issues raised were underway with the Ministry of Public Service.
