The NRM leaning independent aspirants for Dokolo district woman Member of Parliament (MP) bye election Dr. Anna Grace Lalam, has withdrawn from the race.
Her Personal Political Assistant Boney Aliro, confirmed that she stepped down in favor of the NRM party candidate just three days before the polling date.
The decision was made during a reconciliation meeting held in Nwoya District at around 3:00 AM on Monday.
However, Dr. Lalam said she received a call for stepping down from the president, and that she need to be officially convinced, so as to withdraw from the electoral commission.
With the stepping down of Anna Grace Lalam, only 6 aspirants are now left in the race.
The aspirants include; Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Janet Rose Adongo Elau from National Resistance Movement (NRM), Sarah Aguti from Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Harriet Ageno of National unity platform(NUP)
Others are Esther Akullo Obot and Rebecca Arao all are independent candidates.
Akullu Obot, and Arao are still in the race despite the NRM party’s director of mobilization Rosemary Seninde, and director of communication, Emmanuel Domo’s attempt to convince them to step down.
The Electoral Commission had scheduled election for March 21, 2024 for Dokolo Woman Member of Parliament after the seat fell vacant following the death of the former MP Cecilia Atim Ogwal who died of cancer-related illness on January 18th at a hospital in India.
